The Espina S — Shortie — brings the Espina’s minimalist design into a shorter, more compact platform while retaining the same replaceable scraper blade.

The original Espina began with photographs of improvised knives made from penitentiary-issued disposable toothbrushes, sometimes referred to as “Tomahawks.” The ingenuity of making something functional from almost nothing became the starting point for a completely different kind of utility knife.

Espina — Spanish for thorn — carries that philosophy into a precision-machined, replaceable-blade platform. The Espina S reduces the footprint further, providing a compact handle built around secure blade attachment and controlled cutting.

Each Espina S includes a purpose-built sheath and a blade. Blade styles, markings, and sheath configurations vary by production run and are identified in the individual listing.

Features

Compact Fixed-Blade Design
The Espina S pairs a shortened, rigid handle with a replaceable cutting edge. No folding mechanism or retracting assembly — just a compact platform built around the blade.

Screw-Based Blade Mount
The blade mounts directly to the handle with screw-based hardware, combining fixed-blade rigidity with the convenience of a replaceable edge.

Purpose-Built Ergonomics
The shortened handle preserves the Espina’s distinctive curves and indexing features in a smaller footprint. Its shape supports deliberate grip placement and controlled cutting while keeping the platform slim.

Exposed Blade Design
The replaceable blade is an intentional part of the Espina S’s appearance. Its outline, mounting hardware, and relationship to the handle remain visible, bringing the construction directly into the design.

Magnetic Wrench Storage
An included hex key wrench stores magnetically in the handle for convenient blade changes. Keep the magnets clean and dry, with a light coat of oil to help prevent surface rust.

Slim, Compact Profile
The Espina S offers a shorter alternative to the original Espina for those who prefer a smaller overall package with the same scraper-blade format.

Performance

The Espina S combines a rigid cutting platform with an easily replaceable edge.

Blade changes use the included hex key wrench stored in the handle. When the edge becomes worn or damaged, replace the blade and keep going. No sharpening is required.

Blade Tips supplies a blade selected and tested for use with the platform. Disposable scraper blades are manufactured by third parties, and their country of manufacture may vary.

Blade Options

The Espina S accepts HD .012 Single-Edge Scraper blades.

Additional replacement blades and limited specialty or engraved options may be available separately. Tested replacement blades in 100-count packs are available in the Blades section.

The supplied blade may be sterile, marked, or specialty engraved, depending on the release. Refer to the individual listing for the included configuration.

Sheath System

Every Espina S includes a purpose-built sheath designed for secure retention and access.

The specific sheath is identified in the individual production-run or drop description. Available configurations may include handmade leather neck sheaths and other limited carry options.

Some sheath configurations may incorporate magnetic retention. Additional sheath options may be available under Accessories.

Care & Maintenance

Disposable scraper blades can develop surface corrosion when exposed to moisture, humidity, perspiration, or other corrosive conditions.

Periodically apply a light coating of suitable corrosion-preventive oil to the blade, particularly when carrying or storing the Espina S in humid conditions.

Keep the blade, handle, mounting hardware, wrench, and magnets clean and dry. Apply a light coat of oil to the exposed magnets to help prevent surface rust, and periodically inspect the blade and hardware for corrosion, damage, loosening, or excessive wear.

Minor surface rust may be removed with a standard pencil eraser. Work in the direction of the steel’s grain to help minimize visible marks.

Replace blades showing significant corrosion, damage, or deterioration.

Magnet / Medical Device Warning

The Espina S contains magnets for wrench storage. Some sheath configurations may contain additional magnets.

Magnets may interfere with pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), and other implanted or wearable medical devices.

Do not wear or carry the Espina S or a magnet-equipped sheath near a magnet-sensitive medical device. Consult the device manufacturer or your healthcare provider regarding magnetic interference before carrying or handling the platform or its sheath.

International Orders

International shipping regulations and import requirements vary by destination.

Blade Tips does not ship an Espina S internationally with a blade installed or packaged together with the handle. International orders ship as the handle and sheath only, unless other arrangements have been made.

Replacement blades may be eligible to ship separately where permitted.

International shipments require an adult signature. Contact Blade Tips before ordering if special shipping arrangements are needed.

The purchaser is responsible for determining whether the Espina S, replacement blades, and other components may legally be imported, possessed, or carried in the destination country or jurisdiction.

Blade Tips is not responsible for items delayed, refused, seized, or confiscated by customs or other governmental authorities.

Each Espina S is produced in small batches and finished individually.

Hand finishing and anodizing make each piece unique. Color, texture, and pattern may vary, particularly with stonewashed, camouflage, and splash finishes.

Blade appearance, markings, engraving, and manufacturer may also vary by production run. Unless the listing identifies the exact piece pictured, the knife, blade, and sheath you receive may differ slightly from the photos.
